How to define the optimum gate location with Simpoe?

Simpoe software can help users define the optimum gate location(s) to fill the mold properly.

General rules:

The gate location is from where the plastic fills the cavity.
At the end of fill, the gate location is from where the packing pressure comes from, until the plastic at the gate freezes.
The number of gates must be as small as possible. More than one gate always results in a weld line.
Several spaced gates must be used if the pressure to fill the mold is too high (Ex: thin and large shell parts).
For "ring" shape parts, several gates arranged in star from the ring center must be used to minimize the "ovalization" warpage effect.
When possible, the gate must be located where the part is the thickest. This allows a longer packing time (gate freezing time) and so, can minimize the shrinkage.
When possible, the gate must be located to minimize the flow path length. This allows a better flow & pack balancing, avoid over-packing and reduce filling pressure.

For this last rule, Simpoe software provides a tool located in the "Gate Selection" menu.

This tool provides geometry-based gate location(s) that balance the best the melt front.

Gate selection in "Surface" analysis

In "Surface" mesh approach, the gate location is modeled as a node of the mesh.

The gate cannot be selected on the middle of a triangle, however, Simpoe offers the possibility to create a node anywhere in the "Edit" menu. Then, user can select the gate on the created node.

Although the gate diameter can be set, it will not affect the simulation results.

The user must design the runners (using sketch lines designed with the CAD tool) to take the diameter into account and then evaluate the auto-heating and shear effect at the gate.

Gate selection in "Solid" analysis

In "Solid" mesh approach, the gate location is modeled as one or several triangle surfaces.

After having set the diameter and the location (by a single click on the part), the software will only consider the triangles totally inside the diameter as the injection area.

Note: A coarse mesh does not allow to define an accurate gate diameter.

Prior to meshing the part, designing a short extrusion with the CAD tool greatly help to define an accurate gate diameter (as shown on the picture).

Designing the whole feeding system (Sprue + runner) is the best. It allows to calculate the pressure drop and material shearing at the gate.

I have a family mold. How Simpoe software can help balancing it?

Simpoe software can help users defining the right runner diameters in order to balance tools with various cavity volumes: family molds.

"Runner-Balancing" function is only available in Surface/Shell mesh approach, if the runner system has been designed with at least two cavities.

Prerequisites:

Runners must be designed in "Beam" format, based on sketch lines (from your CAD tool) and the "Channel Design" menu.
The whole surface mesh must not exceed 40,000 triangles to avoid a too long calculation time.
Initial runner diameters must be sufficiently large and coarse to avoid a short shot at the first flow calculation.

1. After a first, successful but unbalanced Flow calculation, double-click on "Runner-Balancing".

2. Fill the fields with the diameter ranges that you authorize.

3. Press "Start" button to run the analysis.

4. At the end of the analysis, the following window appears.

The time difference between the first filled and the last filled part must be close to 0 second. It means that all cavities achieve their filling at the same time. The system is balanced.

5. The optimized runner diameters can be read in the "Runner-Balancing" menu. Check "Thickness Distribution" and the software will show the diameters used to balance the system.

What to look for in the melt front animation result?

Simpoe base package provides a true 3D melt front animation of the molten plastic that fills the cavity. Depending on the part design, the gate location(s), the fill time and the material type, the user must check about defaults that may appear.

· The flow must be well balanced.

If possible, set the gate location that shortens the flow path as well as possible. Simpoe "Gate Selection" menu will help you find this location.

· The weld lines must not appear on critical areas.

A weld line creates a aspect default and/or weaken the part mechanical resistance.

· The air traps must be on an easy to vent location.

As the plastic material is hot and under high pressure, an air trap may induce a burn mark.

· The melt front must not brutally slow down.

This effect is caused by high thickness differences and creates flow marks.

· The flow is not jetting.

This mainly happens on very thick parts. This effect may create air bubbles at the center of the thickness. If the plastic material is transparent, this is an aspect default.

Simpoe software provides two “Solid” 3D meshing technologies to enable users to simulate any kinds of geometry. It is, for both mesh types, easy and a matter of seconds to create, even on complex parts.

After having selected “Solid” mesh type, generated the initial surface mesh and cleaned it (when necessary), the user can choose between “Tetrahedral” and “Hybrid” .

“Tetrahedral” option will generate tetrahedron 3D elements based on the initial surface mesh. This initial surface mesh must be sufficiently fine to create at least 3 layers of elements through the part thickness.

“Tetrahedral” suits the best for thick geometries.

“Hybrid” option will generate tetrahedron, prism and pyramid 3D elements based on the initial surface mesh.This initial surface mesh does not need to be fine. The “Hybrid” technology will always create several nodes through the thickness.The pictures below are comparing “Tetrahedral” technology with “Hybrid” technology based on the same initial surface mesh.

For thin geometries, it results in an improved calculation of the temperature and shrinkage gradients.

“Hybrid” suits the best for thin geometries.

SIMPOE demonstrates first plastic application integrated with PTC’s Creo™ at PTC’s worldwide launch event

Torcy, France, October 29th, 2010. SIMPOE, leaders in plastic injection simulation software, announces the integration of its fully embedded plastic injection simulation solution SimpoePro with the PTC Creo. The application will be available when Creo begins shipment, currently expected in June 2011.

SIMPOE, a member of the PTC PartnerAdvantage Program at the Gold Tier, was selected as an early adopter of Creo technology and demonstrated SimpoePro at the Worldwide Creo launch on October 28th in Boston. With SimpoePro, PTC customers involved in the design, development, tooling and manufacturing of plastic parts will be able to optimize the design of their plastic parts, minimize tooling as well as manufacturing costs, without ever leaving their familiar everyday Creo graphic user environment.

SimpoePro offers the ease of use, speed and affordability of all SIMPOE solutions, and addresses the complete injection process, from part filling to part warp age.

Simpoe attends K-Plastic injection molding seminar in Korea with Great Success

K-Plastic is in-official coalition of three companies (Prism, Plax, and Tongmyung Tech). Prism is the offical reseller of Simpoe-Mold in Korea. Plax is a sensor company like Kistler. Tongmyung Tech is a hot runner company like Husky.

Over 130 people attended the seminar and people were extremely satisfied with the outcome. Based on the results Prism decided to hold another seminar at Pusan province on November 12. Details to follow in another blog post.
